Why we love St Margaret’s
St Margaret’s was the first building we converted, we lived here and even had our wedding reception here so we really do love it.
It is a grade 2* listed church which was originally built in the 12th Century and many original features such as the stone font can be admired today.
Its rural location on the edge of a town (Louth) really does allow you to enjoy the best of both worlds, you can wander through the fields by day and then head into town for tapas in the evening, but our favourite thing about St Margaret’s is just how peaceful it is. Once you shut the big wooden doors you can forget the outside world exists and just bask in the peaceful serenity of this amazing building.
St Margaret’s is laid out over one level and provides two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a large kitchen and living space. The open plan design means that the layout is as true to the original design as possible and the tall windows, high arches and vaulted ceiling are totally unobscured. However guests should note that the bedrooms share air space with the main living room which may be less desirable for groups with young children that have earlier bed times.
The combination of underfloor heating and the original Victorian radiators mean that the church is toasty in winter and cool in summer.
Bedrooms
The Nave Bedroom with en-suite bathroom
The master bedroom has a super king size bed with an intricately carved wooden surround. Waking up to the multicoloured light streaming through the stain glass windows is one of the things that makes staying at St Margaret’s so special. The chest of drawers and bank of wardrobes provide a large amount of storage and hanging space for clothes. This bedroom has a large en-suite bathroom with double sink, loo, huge bath and 3m high rainfall shower. The bathroom floor is heated so is cosy on even the coldest of days
The Vestry Bedroom
The second bedroom is located in the old vestry and has a double bed. This bedroom also benefits from a large stain glass window. Being the smaller of the two rooms, the vestry has hanging space and a large chest upon which suitcases can be stored. It is separated from the main living space by a thick curtain.
Shower room
The second bathroom provides a large shower, loo and sink and is located a few meters from the vestry bedroom.
Kitchen
The large, modern kitchen is kitted out with everything you need to whip up a lavish dinner. Coffee lovers will enjoy the inbuilt coffee machine, there is also a family sized fridge/freezer, microwave, double oven, induction hob, dishwasher and washer/dryer. Tea towels, sponges, washing up liquid and some dishwasher tablets are provided.
Living space
The living room, kitchen and dining area are all one space so you can all chat whilst dinner is being prepared or watch the morning news whilst making breakfast.
There is a 55 inch smart TV with access to Netflix, Amazon Prime, BBC I player etc (guests will need their own log in)
There are speakers in the ceiling which can connect to your mobile device via Chrome cast.
There is a good wifi connection (**** speed) so those seeking to work from home will be able to dial in to video conferences etc.
Outdoor space
There is a large lawned area with a table and chairs for al fresco dining and plenty of space for games. The garden is not fully fenced so dogs cannot be left unattended in the garden and there is a public foot path that runs through the church yard past the front door of the church. It is not a frequently used path but there are occasional ramblers/dog walkers. The neighbouring field often contains grazing sheep and lambs so we ask that you only bring canine companions that are well behaved around livestock and other dogs.
Parking
There is a large gravelled driveway which can easily accommodate four cars. The driveway opens up on to a narrow country lane, which makes access difficult for large camper vans or trailers
Accessibility
St Margaret’s is arranged over one floor, however there are single steps up to the bedroom and within the master bedroom which mean they are not accessible in a wheel chair.
Local area
St Margaret’s is located in the village of Keddington on the edge of Louth. It has the calm and quiet of a rural location whilst having all of the bars, restaurant and amenities of the town within a 5 minute drive. Louth canal is 5 minutes walk away. You can walk east along the pretty canal path to Louth (25 mins to the nearest dog friendly pub) or head west and follow the path through the fields and villages for miles and miles.
The sandy beaches of the East Coast are 20 – 40 minutes away. Between November and January the beach at Donna Nook is home to a huge colony of grey seals that come to shore to have their pups which is a wonderful sight to behold. Chapel St Leonards, Anderby Creek and Huttoft are great beaches for dog walking. Saltfleetby-Threddlethorpe Dunes and Gibralta Point are the best spots for wild life, with the former being one of only five locations in the UK where the Natterjack Toad can be found, and of course the classic sea side towns of Cleethorpes, Skegness and Mablethorpe are nearby and offer attractions such as donkey rides and roller coasters.
The beautiful rolling hills of the Lincolnshire Wolds are ideal for walking and cycling. St Margaret’s is located 15 minutes drive away from Cadwell Park so is also a great base for people with an interest in motorsport
The historic city of Lincoln is 50 minutes away by car and we would recommend a day trip to see the amazing cathedral and the original Magna Carta which is held in Lincoln Castle.
The town of Louth has a Morrisons and an Aldi Supermarket as well as a traditional street market on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturday. Mansion Farm online shop can arrange deliveries to Keddington on Wednesday and Fridays.
Getting around
We would recommend to travel here by car.
The nearest train stations are Market Rasen (17 miles away) or Grimsby Town (17 miles away).
There is a bus station in Louth with services running to Lincoln, Grimsby and other towns in the wolds. The bus station is 1.6 miles from Keddington, the last stretch of road is a country lane with out a pavement so we would not recommend to walk this with luggage or after dark.
